About Whitney
Whit released her first and only self-published album called Light Up the Easter before her cancer diagnosis. As a teen and adult, she followed Misty Edwards and Sara Groves, both talented Christian singers and songwriters nominated for Dove Awards.
Mike and Whit often spoke of the singers’ transparency, evident through their profound lyrics that stirred the soul. Whit loved all kinds of music that had a gritty and honest feel. Mike confesses when it was just him and Whit in the car, they also listened to Mumford & Sons, U2, Johnny Cash and occasionally The Cranberries. Music was something they had in common. Whit was about thirteen when she declared that she would receive a Dove Award one day, and Mike and Darla both agreed it would probably happen.
In his book Surrendered & Unafraid, Mike shares about the birthday when Whit did in fact receive her Dove Award – the Ultimate Prize.

What happens when the God of miracles doesn’t give you the miracle?
When Mike lost his twenty-seven-year-old, worship-leading daughter, Whitney, to an incurable cancer in her bloodstream, he was left with only tormenting grief and no miracle. Disappointments, questions, and contradictions abounded, sending him on a deeper spiritual quest to understand more about the nature of God. In Surrendered and Unafraid, Mike invites readers into a blended journey—both Whitney’s and his own—of how they came to know the God of mystery in Whitney’s pain and his sorrow.
